The SKS Foundation is a legacy project in memory of Susan Kathryn Shiner. Susan spent her adult life working toward making the world a better place for women and children. For decades Susan had a vision for the creation of a Childcare Centre at Iris Kirby House. Her vision has evolved in to a plan to open a Family Center and eventually a childcare centre for any children who identify having current and past experiences of trauma
We hope to provide support for families through our center with dedicated staff and backed by our community. Families can thrive after a traumatic experience, with guided, trauma informed approaches and practices. Children can recover from trauma without enduring a lifelong impact. Our centre can provide these families with all the support and tools to thrive and regain a life without any lasting impact of trauma.
"Activism is the rent I pay for living on this planet."
As a lifelong feminist, founder, passionate activist, advocate, nurturer and beacon of love and warmth Susan's tireless work for social justice and equality touched innumerable lives in every possible walk of life: the music, arts, social work and women's communities and, in local, provincial and national politics. Her work, life and home were always and forever open to anyone and everyone: those in need of food, comfort, counsel, refuge, a place to lay their head, a place to play and hear music, talk gardening, art, politics or organize events, rallies, and festivals. During a lifetime of unstinting commitment to heartfelt causes Susan received both national and local recognition. The YMCA awarded her its Canadian Peace Medal in 1991 and the YWCA its Woman of Distinction award in 2001. She received the Governor Generals Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case in 2013, The Vagina Warrior Award by The Vagina Monologues in 2017; and, The Lifetime Achievement Award from the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Society.
